Standard travel suitcases can be categorized in several ways: by material, they fall into soft-sided (fabric) and hard-sided types (hard-sided cases can be further subdivided into ABS, PC, and blends like ABS+PC, with ABS, ABS+PC, and pure PC being the most popular materials on the market); by structure, they are classified as either upright trolley cases or horizontal garment cases; and by size, they range from small to large, including 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, and 32-inch models. The most commonly used sizes are the 20-inch case-which meets the standard for carry-on luggage (with the sum of its three dimensions totaling 115 cm, or 105 cm for Virgin Atlantic)-and the 28-inch case, which adheres to the international standard for free checked baggage (with the sum of its three dimensions totaling 158 cm). For domestic flights, the maximum size allowed for checked baggage is 32 inches.
